Founding Stories - Amber Inn Bar & Grill - EST. 1881

Once a bar, always a bar

V1 Staff |

The two-story building that is home to Eau Claire’s oldest continuously operating bar in the area and one of the oldest in Wisconsin was built in 1881, serving the community under the name Walter’s Brewery.

141 years later, it may have changed a thing or two (and we won’t talk about those Prohibition years), but it still has that same great bar spirit, offering a large menu, signature homemade Bloody Marys, 10 draft taps, and a selection of German import and domestic beers.

Historic photos and memorabilia adorn the walls of this charming small-town joint, offering a history lesson – or a place to enjoy the present. Since 1981, this eatery has been owned and operated by the Johnson family and converted to a real “original bar and grill,” where the food is cooked in front of you.

Amber Inn Bar & Grill is a friendly, laid-back place to relax, hang out, shoot the breeze, eat a phenomenal burger, or cheers with a cold one.
