THE LAST SLICE? Covizza, currently operating out of Banbury Place in Eau Claire, announced plans to relocate to The 1106 by next spring. Just days later, those plans have been permanently put on hold.

Only hours after Modicum Brewery announced the cancelation of its plans to move to The 1106 – previously known as Artisan Forge Studios (1106 Mondovi Road, Eau Claire) – leading to the co-owners’ decision to close the local brewery’s doors permanently, popular pizza joint Covizza also said its relocation to The 1106 had fallen through.

Covizza shared posts on Facebook and Instagram with the same message, detailing their emotional turmoil over the shocking decision. The owners, Jacob Paulsrud and partner Brittany, began operating out of Banbury Place (800 Wisconsin St., Suite 210, Eau Claire) in 2021 after founding Covizza during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Oct. 10, Covizza shared news of their plans to move to and operate out of The 1106. “It’s looking like we will be opening early spring of 2024,” the post stated. The post also noted their excitement to be neighbors with Modicum Brewing and others who operate in The 1106.

Just eight days later, on Oct. 18, Covizza announced it would not be moving into The 1106 and their lease at Banbury Place was ending, meaning the popular pizza eatery will not have a location to operate out of once leaving Banbury.

“It’s with a very somber heart to divulge this incredibly sh*tty news. The plan has been put on hold permanently and the move to 1106 won’t be happening. We are so gutted, confused and caught off guard. We can’t help but feel gaslit and strung along with our hopes and dreams dangling in front of our noses but that’s business I guess,” the post began.

As far as the reason behind the sudden news, the post suggested a lack of communication and issues with construction timelines. “ALL parties involved put A LOT of personal time AND effort into the project and due to construction timelines and little to no communication, it just got out of hand so here we are unfortunately,” the post stated. “WE are now, once again, looking for a new home for COVIZZA or whatever semblance that may be. … It’s hard to not wear our emotions on our sleeves.”

The post gave a nod of support to Modicum Brewery, and also listed Covizza’s email address with a request for location suggestions.

Artisan Forge Studios announced its rebranding to The 1106 this summer, when it shared plans to remodel and expand, including creating a new 5,000-square-foot area on the south side, adding a performing arts area and an 18-hole mini golf course, and remodeling an 800-square-foot space to continue housing artists and providing a creative space.

No public statement has been released by The 1106 as of Thursday, Oct. 19.
