About Volume One Magazine
1st issue March 2002, 22 pgs
So you want to know a bit more about Volume One, eh? Here's the story. The idea was conceived by two creative scenesters, Nick Meyer and Dale Karls, in November of 2001 with a series of heated discussions about Eau Claire arts and entertainment, what to do with their free time, and the publishing world. Work began on the first issue (of just 24 pages) right around Jan 1st of 2002, with 2,000 copies hitting the streets in mid-March of 2002.
at 17 S. Barstow Since then, the look, content, and goals of the magazine have gone through dozens of changes with one thing remaining constant - its mission. Volume One is here to help people enjoy the cultural riches of the Chippewa Valley, and to entertain them in the process. Now residing in a great downtown loft office space, printing 10,000 copies, distributing at 200 area locations, and reaching an industry estimated 30,000 readers - Volume One is poised to make its mark on the Chippewa Valley and help launch a creative revolution. Volume One - in Print MediaEvery once in a while a "rival" publication decides that Volume One is just SO cool that they just have to break down and do a story about us. It doesn't happen that often, but when it does, we appreciate it. Here are a few of the articles that have appeared over the years:
Spectator (UWEC) - Entertainment Article: March 2005 Spectator (UWEC) - Entertainment Feature: April 2002 Volume One - on the RadioSpectrum West - Nick and Dale interviewed on WPR after the release of the second issue in June of 2002 Murphy in the Morning - Nick, Dale, and Eric interviewed on WAYY morning show in the Summer of 2003 Spectrum West - Nick and Megan interviewed on WPR arts and culture show in March of 2005 Volume One - on Local TVSenior Writer Eric Rasmussen makes his monthly appearance on TV-18's morning show. April Fools JokesSometimes we're naughty. We first pulled an April Fools joke in 2004, saying the worlds biggest metal band Metallica was going to appear at the tiny local coffee shop Racy D'lene's while on their unpublicized underground coffee shop tour across the nation. The shop received tons of phone calls and had even more laughs. Then came the joke of 2005. I'd like to say the whole thing was masterfully planned and brilliantly executed, but it was really a last-second idea just hours before the magazine went to print. There was no plan for handling any "backlash," and when the angry calls from Oakwood Mall, Carmike Cinemas (and both of their corporate offices) started coming in, we had to improvise. Let's just say Oakwood Mall helped us publicize the joke more than we ever could have dreamed. Use these listings, articles, photos, and video to put the story together for yourself. Random Sidebar Greatest HitsOne crazy mixed-up night at the Seahorse Inn in the summer of 2002, just before the 3rd issue of Volume One was complete, publisher/editor Nick Meyer and friends stumbled upon the most beautifully designed item in all of the Chippewa Valley - the darling little sparkling-blue vinyl chairs that inhabit the Seahorse Inn. That discovery forever changed the course of the magazine, as the "Chair of the Month" was born. Since then, a whole litany of "__________ of the Month" items have appeared in our pages - as well as "Rejected Promotional Products," "Top-Five Lists," and more.
